Many thousands of species of ants have been described across Australia. Ants are social insects who live in colonies mostly located in soil, wood or amongst rocks. The size of each colony varies greatly according to species and environmental conditions.
Some ants are predatory, some scavengers and like most species of insects ants can be adaptive to take advantage of seasonal and localised environmental conditions.
Around our homes we are likely to come across ants in and around buildings, including in walls, roof voids, often in the kitchen or bathroom and of course around the gardens and lawns.
As a group ants are considered to be amongst the most successful insects on this planet.
